Automatic versus Chat only combat mode

The GM can choose supported rules automation or Chat only rolls, while keeping explicit manual controls available.

What Automatic mode does

Automatic is the default for existing campaigns. Supported actions can spend resources, resolve target effects and update health or conditions. The scope depends on the implemented rule, not simply whether a spell name exists in the library.

What Chat only means

Chat only posts action rolls, save DCs and descriptions. It does not spend slots or uses, roll target saves, alter HP or status, create concentration areas, or queue effect rulings automatically. The group resolves those consequences itself.

This mode is useful when the table wants the shared interface but prefers to handle a particular encounter’s mechanics manually. Ownership, turn restrictions and privacy still apply.

Switch modes without replaying actions

The GM owns the campaign setting. Changing mode preserves existing effects and pauses their automatic initiative updates. Pending approvals are cancelled to avoid executing an action under assumptions that have changed. Returning to Automatic does not replay earlier Chat only casts. If the table made manual changes while automation was paused, review that state before continuing.

Quick steps

  1. Have the GM choose the campaign mode.
  2. Tell players how costs and damage will be handled.
  3. Use manual controls deliberately in Chat only.
  4. Review state when changing back to Automatic.
