How do I move around the map and measure distance?

Everyone · Maps & tokens · Updated

The pointer handles both map movement and token selection. Measurement guides appear while you drag and clear when you release.

Step by step

  1. Drag an empty part of the map to pan.
  2. Scroll up or down to zoom; a trackpad pinch also zooms over the map.
  3. Click a token to open its compact character menu, or drag it to move it when you have permission.
  4. Choose the ruler tool and drag from the start point to the destination.
  5. Release to clear the guide, then switch back to the pointer to interact with tokens.

Movement distance is a visual aid

Dragging a token shows the distance of that move. The guide turns red when the move exceeds the token’s movement-speed allowance, but does not prevent the move. This leaves room for GM instructions and other reasons to reposition a creature.

A red guide is not permission to ignore your table’s movement rules. Confirm Dash, difficult terrain, teleportation and other special movement with the GM rather than treating the ruler as a complete movement ruling.

Keep gestures over the map

Scroll over a menu to scroll its contents; scroll over the map to zoom the scene. Safari trackpad pinch is supported too. If zoom behaves like grid resizing, finish or cancel Align grid first.

If something will not move

Players control their own tokens; the GM has broader control. Check that you selected a token you own and that another tool or open interaction is not capturing the pointer. The ruler and movement guide are temporary, so they should not remain after release.
