How do I equip items, drink potions and throw things?

Players & GM · Characters · Updated

Add equipment to the character, then use supported item controls from Items in the token menu. Notes alone do not automatically create a usable item.

Step by step

  1. Open the character’s full sheet and find Gear or the item-management controls.
  2. Add an item and review its quantity, equipment state and any attunement or usage details offered.
  3. Return to the token menu and open Items.
  4. Choose the relevant use, drink or throw action when the item supports one.
  5. For a targeted use, select an eligible target in range and review the result in the roll log.

Equipment and supported effects

An equipped supported magic weapon can affect its associated attack, while other supported items can change character statistics or provide an activation. Check the resulting attack and sheet rather than assuming that typing “+1 sword” into a free-text note grants a bonus.

Charges, quantities and encounter effects depend on the item’s supported implementation and the campaign’s automation setting. Custom or conditional item powers may still need a GM ruling.

Potion rules belong to the campaign

The standard setting uses an action and rolls healing. The Quick or careful house rule offers a bonus action with rolled healing or an action for maximum healing. Giving a potion to someone else is separate from carefully drinking it yourself.

Throwing is not universal healing

Supported thrown items, including alchemist’s fire, use their available throw action and range. A healing potion heals when thrown only if the GM enables the thrown-healing house rule. Do not assume every carried object has an automated throw effect or splash area.
