Can we switch automatic game mechanics off?

GM · Combat & spells · Updated

Yes. Choose Automatic for supported rule processing or Chat only when your group wants to handle the consequences themselves.

Step by step

  1. Choose the automation mode when creating a campaign, or open Settings in an existing campaign.
  2. Select Automatic or Chat only for spells and combat.
  3. Tell the players which mode the table is using before the next action.
  4. In Chat only, read the posted roll information and apply agreed outcomes manually.
  5. After changing modes, reselect an action if a previous targeting preview was cleared.

What Automatic means

Supported actions can spend slots or uses, resolve target saves, change HP and status, and create concentration areas. Conditional and unsupported effects can still require a GM resolution. Automatic is not a promise that every official or homebrew rule has an implementation.

What Chat only means

The app posts action rolls, save DCs and descriptions without automatically spending action resources, rolling target saves, changing HP or conditions, creating concentration zones or queuing automatic effect rulings. The group can discuss the result and use explicit manual controls.

Ownership, turn restrictions and privacy remain in place. Chat only does not give players permission to edit another person’s token.

Switching during a game

Existing effects are preserved rather than deleted when you change modes. Their automatic initiative updates are paused in Chat only. Returning to Automatic does not replay earlier chat-only casts or retrospectively spend their resources. Pending action approvals and stale targeting may be cleared to avoid resolving under the wrong setting.
