How do concentration and lasting spell areas work?

Players & GM · Combat & spells · Updated

Supported concentration effects stay linked to the casting token. Persistent map areas can remain visible after the short casting animation ends.

Step by step

  1. Choose the spell and confirm its targeting or area placement.
  2. In Automatic mode, complete the supported cast and check the concentration marker.
  3. Keep the casting token in play so its concentration can be tracked.
  4. Use the active-effect or concentration controls when the caster deliberately ends the spell.
  5. For an ongoing effect that needs a ruling, use the available GM-resolution flow rather than casting it again just to apply another tick.

A lasting zone is not the casting animation

A brief burst or projectile shows that an action happened. A concentration zone is separate: a point-based area stays where it was placed, while a caster-centred aura follows its caster. The calibrated grid determines its size and position.

Replacing or losing concentration removes linked supported effects and areas. Deleting the caster also removes its linked concentration state. Moving a decorative panel or replaying an animation does not extend the spell.

Damage can challenge concentration

Supported automatic damage can trigger concentration checks using the token’s relevant modifiers. Detailed roll information and spell names remain private to the owner and GM; public markers do not reveal the whole sheet.

Do not assume the zone rolls damage by itself

Displaying an area does not automatically implement every enter-area, start-of-turn or ongoing damage trigger. Spell-specific unsupported triggers remain GM-resolved. Outside combat, the GM also adjudicates elapsed time instead of treating real-world minutes as the session clock.
