How do I import a D&D Beyond character?

Players & GM · Characters · Updated

Import a filled 2014 D&D Beyond character PDF to prepare a character for review. This makes a copy; it does not connect or synchronise your Beyond account.

Step by step

  1. Export the character’s PDF from D&D Beyond using its character-management export option.
  2. In the character creator, choose Import from D&D Beyond.
  3. Choose the original filled character PDF, up to 8 MB.
  4. Review the import notes, confirm the 2014 rules and check the sheet’s tabs.
  5. Correct missing details, optionally add the original character link, then use the import/save button.

Use the right kind of PDF

The reader uses the filled fields in the character sheet. A scanned page, screenshot or flattened print-to-PDF copy may look correct but no longer contain the fields the importer needs. If reading fails, try a fresh original export rather than taking a picture of the page.

The PDF is read on your device. Saving stores the resulting character in the campaign, not the original PDF.

Review before saving

Check hit points, armor class, ability scores, spell choices and equipment. Import notes flag details that need attention. A recognisable feature description does not mean its entire mechanic has been converted into an executable action.

Changes do not sync back and forth

Editing the imported character does not edit D&D Beyond, and later Beyond changes do not automatically update this copy. The optional Beyond link is a shortcut to the original sheet, not a connected-account permission. Avoid importing repeatedly as a substitute for editing an existing character.
