Why a character PDF might not import

Most character-import problems begin with the wrong PDF format, missing form fields or an unsupported rules edition. Check the source before retrying.

A readable PDF is not always an importable sheet

A PDF can look correct while containing only an image or flattened printed text. The character importer needs the exported character fields. If it reports that no filled fields were found, export again from D&D Beyond rather than scanning or printing the existing document.

Check the document itself

Use one character per file and check the current upload limit. A locked PDF needs an unlocked export. A very large document or a document containing many characters is not the intended input.

If the app reaches the review screen, distinguish extraction issues from rule-support issues. An unfamiliar spell name may be preserved for review without automatically supplying its complete mechanics.

Resolve a mismatch carefully

Compare ability scores, maximum HP and attack bonuses with the source. Do not blindly compensate by adding bonuses in several places. Equipment and imported totals can overlap. If a custom feature is missing or ambiguous, keep its wording and discuss the result with the GM before play. Import review is the checkpoint for correcting these details, not a guarantee that every PDF format will work.

Quick steps

  1. Confirm it is a 2014 D&D Beyond export.
  2. Check that it contains one character and is unlocked.
  3. Re-export instead of using a scanned copy.
  4. Read review notes before correcting values.
